“Transmission

The U.S. power grid needs a stronger backbone to deliver the affordable, reliable and clean energy Americans need. Communities need better infrastructure and more electric transmission lines to connect to low-cost clean energy resources, support the electrification of vehicles and buildings, and help keep the lights on during extreme weather.

Yet outdated planning processes, permitting challenges and barriers to connecting new energy resources have slowed transmission line development and other critical investments to modernize the power grid. These obstacles increase costs, delay projects and make it harder to meet growing electricity demand.

EDF is advancing policies that modernize the grid, improve transmission planning and help ensure communities share in the benefits of a cleaner, more affordable and reliable energy system, even as recent federal actions create new challenges and uncertainty for clean energy development.

Across the U.S., we work with federal agencies, states, utilities, consumer advocates and community organizations to expand transmission, strengthen grid reliability, lower energy costs and reduce pollution. Our work includes transmission planning, speeding up the process for new energy projects to connect to the grid, grid-enhancing technologies and other solutions to make the electric grid deliver more reliable, affordable power.

Staff perspective

The clean energy transition depends on a grid that can move power farther, faster and more efficiently.
