Reports: Trump EPA moves to repeal lifesaving limits on power plant pollution

According to news reports, the Trump EPA is poised to remove vital national limits on the amount of climate pollution that fossil fuel power plants can put into our air. 

“Americans everywhere are already suffering from record-breaking heat, more dangerous floods and storms, and skyrocketing insurance costs,” said Vickie Patton, General Counsel for Environmental Defense Fund. “Tearing down our national protections against climate pollution from power plants will have enormous costs for the health, safety and well-being of families across the country. Clean, affordable and reliable technologies are widely available to power our homes and businesses. EDF is determined to uphold EPA’s legal responsibility to protect the public from this harmful pollution.”  

Coal, gas and oil-fired power plants are responsible for about one-quarter of our nation’s total climate pollution, second only to the transportation sector. The extensive pollution from these power plants is one of the largest sources of climate-destabilizing pollution in the world.   

The Trump EPA proposed repealing the Carbon Pollution Standards for power plants last year. Its own analysis at the time found that eliminating these protections would cause thousands of premature deaths and tens of billions of dollars in increased health costs for Americans.
