How Natural Gas Impacts Human Health

A Virtual Panel for How Methane Impacts Human Health

The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) will host a panel discussion featuring Canada and U.S.-based researchers investigating the connections between human health and natural gas. The panel is supported by the Canadian Lung Association.

The virtual panel will be held Oct. 12, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Panelists will focus on recent research on the connection between natural gas and co-emitted chemicals that impact health. The panel will also explore policy measures that can help to address these emissions.

EDF scientist Veronica Southerlan, PhD, MPH will moderate the panel.

Veronica Southerland, PhD, MPH, (she/her) - Dr. Southerland has worked in environmental and chemical policy at the US Chemical Safety Board, Department of Homeland Security and the US Environmental Protection Agency. Dr. Southerland was previously a researcher at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences before moving to the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health where she completed her PhD in Environmental Health. Dr. Southerland’s work at the Environmental Defense Fund focuses on the use of high-resolution exposure data to estimate the health impacts of air pollution.

Panelists include:

Curtis Nordgaard, MD, MSC - Dr. Nordgaard is a board-certified pediatrician with a diverse research background in basic and clinical science. Dr Nordgaard’s research examines the implications of natural gas on human health. Dr. Nordgaard completed separate Master of Science degrees in Psychology and Biology from McMaster University, followed by a Medical Degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School, and completed residency training at the Boston University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School combined training program in pediatrics.

Jonathan Buonocore, SCD – Dr. Buonocore is an Assistant Professor at Boston University, School of Public Health. His research interests are in evaluating the impacts, benefits, and tradeoffs of technology and policy choices in energy, transportation, agricultural practices, and climate change mitigation and adaptation. Buonocore received his ScD from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Katlyn MacKay, PhD - Dr. Katlyn MacKay is a postdoctoral fellow at the Environmental Defense Fund with over 7 years of experience in methane emissions research. Her research uses direct measurements to better understand the sources and magnitudes of methane emissions from oil and gas operations. She completed her PhD in Oil and Gas Engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and her MSc in Earth Sciences at St. Francis Xavier University.
